Alien: Isolation — v0.6.1

About

GRAND-MotherVR is a VR mod for Alien: Isolation (2014 survival horror game by Creative Assembly, published by Sega). The mod is developed by JayP and is based on the discontinued MotherVR mod by Nibre (which ceased development years ago). JayP uses MotherVR as a basis, fixing graphical issues with the game and some issues with Nibre's mod, plus quality-of-life updates such as reworked controls. Any mod that worked with MotherVR should still work with this new version.

The main goals of GRAND-MotherVR are: Improved Visuals, 6DoF Motion Controls, and an Overall Improved VR Experience. It transforms Alien: Isolation into a more nail-biting experience, capturing the claustrophobic tension of Sevastopol Station.

Current features include:
- Simplified installation: after installing MotherVR, GRAND requires only a single DLL added to the game folder; shader patching happens on-the-fly while loading into the game
- Oculus and SteamVR support
- 6DoF hand tracking and headset tracking
- Full Room-Scale support (physical crouching not yet supported)
- Support for standing and seated play
- New control set for modern headsets
- Support for snap and smooth rotation
- Physical throwing of objects
- Option to play the original MotherVR mod with just the graphical GRAND additions
- Graphical fixes and enhancements: VR-optimised render pipeline for increased performance; body visibility options (full body, arms+hands only, or hands only); HUD visibility options (HUD+crosshair, HUD only, no HUD and no crosshair); transparent pause menu instead of black; fixed high resolution rendering; disabled object pop-in based on distance; disabled object and shadow LOD (all objects/shadows always rendered at maximum quality); optimised main rendering pass object culling; in-game 4K shadows option; fixed Planar Reflections in VR (Default and Alternative options); restored original AA modes for VR (FXAA, SMAA1x, SMAA2x); added TAA based on AliasIsolation as an anti-aliasing option; smoke/fog effects now unaffected by environment lighting.

Planned features — "must haves": EPIC support; remove the MotherVR dependency. "Nice to haves": configurable controls; in-game configuration of GRAND; addition of upscaling like FSR2/3/4; support for a console-exclusive feature where the Alien can detect the player via sounds from the mic; physical interactions with the maintenance jack and cattleprod.

The current download is a Test Build v0.6.1 (dated 30/06/2026). It is a test build, so immersion-breaking and possibly game-breaking bugs are expected. Download is from the site link or via the FLAT2VR Modding Community Discord.

Requirements: Steam version of Alien: Isolation (EPIC and GOG versions not supported yet); a headset compatible with SteamVR or Meta/Oculus Link; a working MotherVR v0.8.1 installation; Windows 10 or 11 (with a Discord-posted fix for Windows 11 startup crashes).

Workarounds/notes: OpenVR headset auto-resync/recenter on first loading a map; physical throwing of IEDs (hold right grip to ready, release to throw); flashlight via Interact button 'A' while holding right controller near headset or pressing 'RS'; DPad minigames/keypad entry via holding Left Grip while using Left Joystick; if camera doesn't move forward after loading or suit change, press Left Trigger twice; SmoothTurn users should set SmoothRotationSensitivity to 0.4 in grand.ini; body visibility configurable via HideBody=0/1/2 in grand.ini; TAA sharpening via [TAA] SharpeningStrength; smoke/fog tuning via [StaticSmoke] GrayscaleValue/Intensity and [Debug] DisableStaticSmoke; gamepad play via [Debug] OGMotherVRMode=1.

Known issues: SteamVR Home must be fully loaded before starting the game or it may crash on startup; SteamVR Theatre Mode must be disabled; recenter still occasionally needed after certain animations/interactions (use Left Grip + Right Grip); wrong hand offsets when using Steam Link with a Quest headset; aimed weapons fail to fire at certain low/high angles; controls are not configurable (fixed MotherVR control set); terminal/rewire box activation distance still original (too far to read text); forearms don't properly rotate when rotating hands; Crew Expandable DLC checkpoint reload can leave player crouched; Index Controllers may need manual mapping of A/X buttons; Crew Expendable DLC can have infinite loading if another map was loaded first.

The mod is not affiliated with or endorsed by Creative Assembly or SEGA. Website by HoriZon; GRAND mod by JayP; MotherVR mod by Nibre. Support via Ko-fi donation to JayP. Issues can be reported on Discord or the GRAND-test GitHub. A video setup guide by Headset-VR is available.
